DIVC Factset Analytics Insight
DIVC is an unusual but tax-efficient take on dividend-based investing. Despite seeking out 30 fundamentally strong and higher-dividend-paying companies—selected via screens for P/B, return on invested capital, and an aversion to highest yielding stocks—the note doesn't pay any dividend or interest. DIVC's index reinvests the dividends, making it a total return index, and the note follows suit. DIVC might appeal to tax-conscious investors, who won't pay taxes on dividends they don't receive. With only 30 names, DIVC makes no attempt at broad market exposure. As an ETN, DIVC doesn't hold any underlying assets, and is only backed by the creditworthiness of CitiGroup. Traders should use extreme caution approaching this ETN: Citigroup is no longer issuing any more of the notes, and those that remain on the market barely trade at all. Couple with the note's high fee, and investors face stiff holding costs on an ETN they may find it difficult to exit.
