The iShares Floating Rate Fund ETF tracks a market-weighted index of US-dollar-denominated, investment-grade floating rate notes with maturities of 0-5 years.

FLOT ETF.com Insight

FLOT tracks an index of investment-grade floating rate corporate bonds with maturities of 0-5 years. FLOT’s bonds pay variable coupon rates, the majority of which use the 3-monthcoverage is consistent with that of our benchmark London Interbank Offer Rate (LIBOR) as their reference. FLOT’s coverage is consistent with that of our benchmark: The majority of its assets are invested in debt due to mature in 1-3 years. FLOT’s near-50% position in US corporate bonds is also reflective of the market, as are its risks as measured by credit spread and effective duration. Cost-wise, FLOT’s 20 bp expense ratio is slightly higher than its competitor, but its superior liquidity and narrower spreads make it our Analyst Pick for the segment. (Insight updated 06/30/2014)

FLOT ETF.com Fit Insight

FLOT delivers excellent coverage of US broad investment-grade floating rate bonds—it uses the same index as our benchmark but holds fewer securities. Its sector and maturity bets are largely muted, it shows slight credit rating deviation from our benchmark. The fund overwieghts A-rated securities at the expense of BBB securities, resulting in a slightly higher portfolio credit rating. FLOT’s credit risk and interest-rate risk, measured by credit spread and effective duration, align well with our benchmark, though its yield is a tiny bit lower. (Insight updated 06/30/2014)
