GARD Fund Description

The Reality Shares DIVCON Dividend Guard ETF tracks an index of dividend-paying US large-cap stocks that are likely to increase dividends. The fund may also move to a 50/50 long/short portfolio, depending on technical indicators.

GARD Factset Analytics Insight

GARD holds US large-cap stocks with rising dividends. When technical indicators forecast market weakness ahead, the fund cuts its long exposure and shorts stocks that aren't expected to raise dividends. The issuer uses a proprietary model to score the 500 largest US firms on their likelihood of increasing dividends in the next year. Holdings for both the long and short portfolios are selected and weighted by this score, known as the DIVCON dividend health score. The DIVCON score is rules-based, but the metrics are not disclosed. Note that stocks with high DIVCON scores are expected to raise their dividends, but aren't necessarily high dividend payers.
GARD has little market risk and return while in its long/short configuration, relying on arbitrage between the long and short portfolios to drive performance. The fund is part of a DIVCON-based suite of ETFs, including siblings LEAD (long only) and DFND (75% long/25% short). It charges a steep fee for the competitive US large-cap space, though it’s not quite as bad as it looks—GARD is required to report short interest expense and dividend payments on its short positions as part of its expense ratio. Unfortunately, the fund hasn’t seen much investor interest and is very difficult to trade.
