HDV Fund Description

The iShares Core High Dividend Equity Fund tracks a dividend-weighted index of 75 high-yielding US equities, screened for high earnings potential and dividend sustainability.

HDV FactSet Analytics Insight

HDV offers complex high-dividend yield exposure in a low-cost package. Eligible securities must pass two Morningstar proprietary screens, each designed to ensure sustainability. The first is the presence of an economic “moat”—something that sets the firm apart from its peers which should help it weather downturns. (The MOAT ETF uses this approach without the high-dividend yield focus.) The second is a forward-looking comparison of assets to liabilities. REITs are excluded. Stocks that make the cut are ranked by yield; the top 75 make the cut. Stocks are weighted by the total dollar amount of dividends paid rather than yield. It’s perhaps this last step that gives the fund it bias towards larger firms, while the sum total of all the steps produces unique sector biases.

While the fund’s sustainability screens are more complex than those of its peers, HDV’s other qualities are quite clear—a huge asset base, a very low fee and strong liquidity. In all, HDV delivers a high-yield play with robust sustainability screens with low all-in costs.
