IWO Factset Analytics Insight
IWO offers growth exposure to the well-known Russell 2000 index in a large and liquid package. All-in costs are extremely low. While it doesn't charge the lowest fee in the segment, IWO tracks its index incredibly well, to the point where the fund is often effectively free to hold, even slightly outperforming its own underlying index at times. Trading costs are low too thanks to high volume and tight spreads. Vanguard’s VTWG tracks the same index; it too has very low holding costs but lags IWO in liquidity.
Compared with our segment benchmark (and some of its peers), IWO prefers smaller firms, including some micro-caps. This bias increases market risk relative to our midcap-leaning benchmark. The fund's P/E and P/B metrics are typically growthier than our benchmark, perhaps aided by the small-size tilt. (Its index uses forecast 2-year growth and historical sales/share to identify growth.) IWO makes modest sectors bets relative to our benchmark. In all, IWO is tough to beat with ultra-low all-in costs and decent coverage from a popular index.
