IWSiShares Russell Mid-Cap Value ETF

IWS Factset Analytics Insight
IWS is a giant in the mid-cap value space. Its basket of 550+ stocks is the segment's largest by far. The fund pulls from a subset of the Russell 1000, avoiding the largest 200 stocks. The fund does a good job of capturing the segment overall, even as it reaches up into large-caps (a bias it shares with our benchmark). While reasonable people can disagree with our definition of mid-cap boundaries, investors should watch for unwanted overlap with the rest of their portfolio. IWS's broad size bounds don't produce wild sector swings, but we do see a lot of mild sector biases. The fund is easy and cheap to trade at any size, with abundant primary and secondary liquidity for traders of any size. It may not have the cheapest fee in the segment, but IWS is sufficiently well-managed to lag its index by less than its fee.
