JPN Factset Analytics Insight
JPN tracks the JPX-Nikkei 400 Total Return Index—an innovative benchmark that was developed recently and has already been adopted by many institutions in Japan and abroad. Both the Japanese Central Bank and the country’s Government Pension Investment Fund are using this benchmark to increase their allocations to the Japanese equity market. The index attempts to pick the highest-quality corporations through a rigorous screening process relying on fundamental metrics such as consistent earnings and high return on equity. We’ll see if institutional buying pressure and a “quality” selection process lead to stronger performance versus plain-vanilla offerings like EWJ. JPN charges a similar fee to other funds; however, the segment is getting crowded, so attracting investor attention and AUM won’t be easy. We’ll see if the tacit endorsement of its index by Japanese government institutions proves helpful to the fund.
