PSCU Fund Description

The PowerShares S&P SmallCap Utilities Portfolio tracks a market-cap-weighted index of small-cap US utilities companies. Its selection universe is limited to the S&P SmallCap 600 Index.

PSCU Factset Analytics Insight

PSCU delivers concentrated exposure to small-cap utilities. Its portfolio thus differs markedly from the broader utilities universe, even beyond the obvious size tilt. PSCU typically overweights natural gas utilities and underweights electric and multiline utilities which are traditionally dominated by large-caps. It also includes telecoms which our all-cap benchmark excludes, and the yield is usually a bit lower too. The fund typically holds just a relative handful of names, and offers some of the segment’s most concentrated exposure—all in small caps of course. For these reasons, PSCU’s performance has differed materially from those of the typical large-cap-dominated utility ETFs.

PSCU charges a reasonable fee and typically tracks its index without much fuss. By now it has a lengthy track record of live performance to evaluate as well.
