REK Factset Analytics Insight
REK provides inverse exposure to the Dow Jones U.S. Real Estate Index—a market-cap weighted index of US real estate companies as classified by Dow Jones. Although REK is not a levered fund, its daily rebalanced inverse exposure still exposes the fund to issues of compounding and path dependency. As a result, the long-term returns of the fund are impossible to predict when compared with its beta-1 cousin, IYR. However, REK’s asset base sufficiently indicates some investor interest, while its median daily dollar volume is much less than we’d like to see in such a product. Investors should also be mindful of the fund’s wide spreads. Still, it’s strongly advised that investors monitor and rebalance their exposure whenever possible.
