The truth is, as the European Union has grown, a divergent line has formed. There are really two Europes now: the eurozone, with countries that have embraced the euro as their currency; and geographic Europe, a pan-European view that includes non-EU countries—namely, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

SPDRs Spread Their Web

SSgA has filed for the right to launch 16 new international ETFs, in one of the most important ETF filings in recent history. The new funds will give SSgA a complete lineup of global and regional ETFs, and will position the company to capitalize on the growing interest in international investing. The filings will put significant pressure on BGI, which has had, until this year, a near monopoly on international ETFs.

 Quick change: QQQQ wears PowerShares garb

In a move that startled the ETF industry, Nasdaq Global Funds, the fund sponsor arm of the Nasdaq Stock Market, transferred sponsorship of its ETFs—including QQQQ—to PowerShares Capital Management, the Wheaton, Illinois-based firm known for its innovative (and at times quirky) ETFs. QQQQ is the one of the most heavily traded stocks in the world.
