Daily ETF Flows: VB Tops Creations Nov. 25

November 28, 2011

Fund rebalancings put several Vanguard funds atop creations list on Friday, Nov. 25, as markets again dipped on angst surrounding the eurozone.

A number of Vanguard ETFs topped IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Creations” list on Friday, a likely result of monthly rebalancing the Valley Forge, Pa.-based money management firm does on its funds, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.

The creations came on a day when markets fell once again as anxiety deepened that the eurozone’s debt crisis and the lack of a decisive response on the part of policymakers was setting the stage for some sort of a possible collapse of the European Union.

Overall, net inflows, led by the Vanguard funds, were $780.7 million, though total assets in U.S.-listed ETFs fell to $1.007 trillion from $1.009 trillion on Wednesday Nov. 23. The inflows helped offset the effects of the stock market declines.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell Friday by 25.77 points to 11.231.78, finishing the worst Thanksgiving week performance since markets started observing the holiday, according to the Wall Street Journal. Europe looms as the huge unknown, and until some path of resolution takes shape, volatility is likely to continue, the newspaper said.

The Vanguard Small-Cap ET (NYSEArca: VB) topped the creations list, pulling in more than $1 billion. That amounted to almost a third of its assets, which ended the day at $4.57 billion. VB was followed by the Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (NYSEArca: VO) and the Vanguard Small-Cap Growth ETF (NYSEArca: VBK), which pulled in $528.5 million and $504.9 million, respectively.

While Vanguard has told IndexUniverse that sizable creations and redemptions at the end of one month or at the beginning of another are related to fund rebalancing, more recently the firm has declined to comment on daily flows data.

Redemptions

Friday’s least popular fund was the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca: SPY), which bled $1.35 billion in assets. It ended Friday’s trading session a $79.12 billion fund.

SPY was following by the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM: QQQ) and the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca: IWM), which suffered outflows of $444.2 million and $256.5 million, respectively.
