Daily ETF Flows: SPY Rakes In $4.21 Billion

September 09, 2011

SPY hauled in $4.2 billion on Thursday, Sept. 8, offsetting another dip in stock prices.

Investors plowed $4.21 billion into the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEArca: SPY) on Thursday, even as stocks moved down 1 percent on disappointment the Federal Reserve hasn’t yet made clear what it might do to prop up the economy at its policy meeting later this month.

Led by the creations in SPY, investors overall added $5.24 billion to U.S.-listed ETFs, with total assets rising to nearly $1.040 trillion from about $1.037 trillion on Wednesday, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse. The inflows offset the effect of falling share prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average shed 119.05 points to settle at 11,295.81 as the market frets about what might transpire at the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Sept. 21-21. Market chatter suggests the central bank may tweak its holdings to emphasize longer-dated debt, and may even be interested in seeing 50-year Treasury bonds come to market.

The iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca: IWM) followed SPY on IndexUniverse’s “Top 10 Creations” list, pulling in $330.3 million in new assets.

The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEArca: XRT), which frequently has large-percentage creations or redemptions, pulled in $216.5 million yesterday. That amounted to 63 percent of its assets, which ended the day yesterday at $558 million.

Also, the Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEArca: VWO) pulled in $128 million, bringing assets in the world’s biggest developing markets fund to $44.36 billion.

A number of bond ETFs were among yesterday’s most-popular funds as well, including the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond Fund (NYSEArca: TLT), the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond Fund (NYSEArca: LQD) and the iShares Barclays MBS Bond Fund (NYSEArca: MBB). TLT added $78.7 million, LQD $67.7 million and MBB about $65 million.

Redemptions

Another bond ETF, the iShares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (NYSEArca: TIP), was yesterday’s least popular fund. It had outflows of $104.4 million, ending the day with just shy of $21 billion in assets.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSEArca: VXX) followed TIP, with redemptions of almost $96 million, or nearly 9 percent of its assets. The ETN had $978 million at the end of Thursday’s trading session.

Other noteworthy redemptions yesterday included the $54.2 million investors pulled from the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca: GLD) physical bullion ETF. GLD is the world’s second-biggest ETF, behind SPY, with assets of $73.41 billion.

Also, the Rydex CurrencyShares Swiss Franc ETF (NYSEArca: FXF) lost 7 percent of its assets, or $62.5 million, to redemptions. It ended Thursday’s session with almost $813 million in assets.

On a percentage basis, the biggest outflows were from the iShares Barclays Agency Bond Fund (NYSEArca: AGZ). It had redemptions of $45 million, amounting to 11 percent of its assets.
