It’s likely that the number of ETFs trading will cross 2,000 funds in 2016. At almost halfway through the year, the number of U.S.-listed ETFs has hit 1,901 with the launch of nine iShares last Thursday.

Interestingly, although launches got off to a slow start this year after a record 2015, as of May 13, exactly as many ETFs had launched in 2016 as launched by that date last year. Both year-to-date periods saw a total of 84 ETFs roll out.

In all, 284 ETFs launched in 2015. Most expect a slowdown in ETF launches in 2016, but even with the inevitable slate of closures, 2,000 U.S.-listed ETFs seems a milestone well within reach.
