ETF Morning Call: Markets Eyeing US Data

November 01, 2012

  • Asian stock indexes were mixed, caught between positive Chinese October PMI data that showed manufacturing is expanding, and a weak Panasonic earnings forecast that is 30 times smaller than analysts had expected.
  • The Nikkei increased 0.21 percent; S&P/ASX 200 sank 1.31 percent; Hang Seng gained 0.83 percent; KOSPI fell 0.71 percent; the Shanghai Composite soared 1.72 percent.

  • European stock indexes rose on expectations for improvement in U.S. consumer confidence, as well as on data pointing to an expansion in Chinese manufacturing. Look for increases in the Vanguard MSCI Europe ETF (NYSEArca: VGK).

  • U.S. stock futures barely moved ahead of a large amount of economic data including employment, jobless claims and manufacturing, and also before corporate earnings data from companies such as AIG and ExxonMobil.
  • Analysts estimate that weekly jobless claims for the week ending on Oct. 27, 2012 stayed at 369,000.
  • Analysts expect that the composite ISM remained at 51.5 in October from September showing that manufacturing continues to expand.
