ETFs Collect $17B In Sept., $50B In Q3

October 01, 2014

ETF asset-gathering continued apace last month, even if falling equities pulled assets lower.

[Editor's note: This story will be updated with additional information on flows into and out of individual funds.]

Investors plowed about $17 billion into exchange-traded funds last month, which means September and the third quarter have turned out to be impressive asset hauls for a 21-year-old ETF industry that's on the verge of crossing the $2 trillion threshold.

However, the S&P 500 Index's decline of more than 2.5 percent has pulled total ETF assets down to less than $1.864 trillion from the $1.913 trillion at the end of August, according to data compiled by ETF.com. Investors are nervous about geopolitical disturbances in the Middle East and Russia, and they're also worried that the S&P 500, which ended August at near-record levels, may be due for a pullback.

A total of about $124 billion has been hauled in year-to-date—including an estimated $50 billion in the third quarter. That compares with more than $131 billion in the first nine months of 2013 and $56 billion in the 2013 third quarter. At the end of 2013, total U.S.-listed ETF assets were $1.807 trillion, and at the end of the 2013 third quarter, assets stood at less than $1.566 trillion.

With three months to go in the year, last year's single-year ETF asset-gathering record of $188 billion is looking like it's possible to eclipse.

"Keep in mind that the fourth quarter of any year tends to be the peak period for ETF asset gathering, so it wouldn't be surprising if the industry got to $2 trillion soon after the end of this year," Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group, the New York-based trading technology firm, said in a recent research note.

US Stocks A Bright Spot

ETFs canvassing U.S. large-cap stocks, such as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY | A-98), have led inflows this month and this quarter. The $182 billion fund makes up almost 10 percent of the $1.879 trillion assets now in ETFs. SPY has pulled in almost $11 billion both in September and in the third quarter.

"ETFs are 'killing it' in 2014, for lack of a less colloquial phrase," Colas said in his note.

But funds targeting European and Japanese equities have fallen out of favor, Colas says.

Additionally, pockets of the bond market that have been sensitive to market chatter about the future direction of interest rates are starting to look challenged, from a flows perspective.

Bond Fund And Gold Outflows

For example, the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF | A-58) has recorded outflows of almost $2.66 in September, but had inflows of $1.4 billion in July and August, when investors were far less concerned about the Federal Reserve needing to raise borrowing costs.

The world's biggest gold ETF, the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD | A-100), is also suffering from outflows as the financial crisis of 2007-2009 fades into the history books.
