The U.S. ETF industry kicked off 2022 with inflows shy of $24 billion in the period between Dec. 31, 2021 and Thursday, or $7.1 billion more than in the first week of 2021. Just over $15.4 billion of that figure came from inflows from Jan. 3 through Thursday, according to ETF.com data provider FactSet.

Broad Market, Leveraged Tech Leads

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) continued its run atop the inflow charts with $4.2 billion in new assets during the period. The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) followed far behind, with respective inflows of $1.8 billion and $1.1 billion.

Dip buying was also out in force on the week in tech, with the ProShares UltraPro QQQ (TQQQ) being the only other fund past the $1 billion inflow mark. TQQQ added $1.1 billion despite a large rotation out of growth-oriented tech stocks as the Federal Reserve signals its intent to raise rates.

The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) has lost 4.7% as of 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time from its opening price Monday.

The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) led sector-specific ETFs in new assets, with $980.55 million on the week when Treasury yields started to approach prepandemic levels. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) also appeared on the top performers list, with respective inflows of $880.2 million, $719.1 million and $601.5 million.

TLT’s Black Monday

The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) saw the deepest outflows of the week by far, losing $1.1 billion in the period. Just under $1.17 billion of that was pulled out on Monday alone, likely due to more risk-on appetite in the marketplace and new corporate bond issuances in the new year.

The SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) and the iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) rounded out the fixed income ETFs on the largest outflows list, with respective losses of $476.9 million and $372.6 million.

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) had the second largest outflows on the week, with $883.2 million in losses, driven mostly by a $479.3 million outflow on New Year’s Eve and a $495.6 million loss on Tuesday.

The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) rounded out the top three losers with a $756 million outflow, likely due to last-minute profit-taking before 2021’s end. The fund saw $1.8 billion in outflows during December.
