Investors added $6.2 billion to U.S.-listed ETFs last week, bringing year-to-date inflows up to $325.4 billion, according to data compiled by ETF.com. That compares with year-to-date inflows of $496.2 billion at this same time a year ago.

Most of the recent inflows continued to go into broad market U.S. equity ETFs as well as U.S. fixed income ETFs. The S&P climbed to 4,000 for the first time since early June last week, building on its rally since the mid-June lows.

The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) and the SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 Growth ETF (SPYG) were among the top asset gatherers last week.

Part of the reason stocks have been rallying recently may have to do with the decline we’ve seen in interest rates. The 10-year Treasury bond yield dipped to 2.75% last week on the back of economic concerns, since bond prices and yields move inversely.

About $1 billion flowed into the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF (GOVT) and the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) last week.

On the other hand, $2 billion and $1.3 billion flowed out of the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) and the SPDR Portfolio Intermediate Term Treasury ETF (SPTI) in the period. On net, U.S. fixed income ETFs saw inflows of $3.2 billion last week.

“Part of it is the ETF wrapper is much better, it’s easier to define liquidity in the ETFs,” Deborah Fuhr, EFTGI managing partner and founder, said on Bloomberg TV on Monday, in response to ongoing inflows into fixed income ETFs.

“We’ve seen some pension funds and large investors take their fixed income portfolios and put them into ETFs because it’s just easier to trade,” she added. “So we saw that definitely during the Covid period where fixed income ETFs were better in terms of price discovery, it’s less expensive for many people than to try to do it themselves—there are just a lot of inherent benefits in the ETF wrapper.”
