Investors used last week’s pullback in stocks to pick up some of their favorite exchange-traded funds. On net, $17.6 billion flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs during the week ending Friday, Oct. 14. Of that, $11.9 billion went into U.S. equity ETFs and another $3 billion went into U.S. fixed income ETFs.

Year-to-date inflows now stand at $440.4 billion, compared with $669.5 billion at this same time a year ago.

Topping last week’s inflows was the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), with creations of $4.6 billion.

The fact that SPY picked up assets in a week in which the S&P 500 tumbled to fresh bear market intraday lows suggests that some may have used the pullback in stocks as a buying opportunity.

SPY is used extensively by traders, which contrasts with the buy-and-hold money that dominates competing funds like the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) and the Vanguard 500 Index Fund ETF (VOO)

Since the start of the year, SPY has registered net outflows of $17.9 billion versus net inflows of $20.6 billion for IVV and $38.2 billion for VOO.

Fixed Income Inflows

Following SPY on the weekly top inflows list were the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF (GOVT), the Vanguard Tax-Exempt Bond ETF (VTEB) and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI)

U.S. fixed income ETFs have had a solid year in terms of inflows despite bonds experiencing their worst performance in history in 2022.

Since the start of the year, $129.3 billion has flowed into U.S. fixed income ETFs, only behind the $204.2 billion that’s come into U.S. equity ETFs.

Yields on Treasury bonds are around 4%, while corporate bonds and municipal bonds offer the equivalent of 5% or more.

That’s attracted investors who have had to settle for paltry interest rates for much of the past decade.
