Gold miner ETFs like 'GLDX' got trashed in the week ended Thursday, April 4, as the S&P fell 0.5 percent on macro jitters.
Gold miner funds saw double-digit losses and topped the worst performers list in the week ending April 4, while markets eased amid growing macro jitters, putting two bond funds at the top of the best performers list.
The Global X Gold Explorers fund (NYSEArca: GLDX), with a sizable loss of 11.15 percent, was the biggest loser, but six other gold and gold miners funds suffered losses upward of 7 percent as well.
While the S&P 500 fell 9.21 points, or 0.05 percent, over that five-day period, rallying markets led the S&P to close at a record, which weighed on prices of safe-haven precious metals.
The iPath Dow Jones UBS Grains Total Return ETN (NYSEArca: JJG) and the Teucrium Corn fund (NYSEArca: CORN) were the only nonprecious metals funds on the worst performers list, sinking 9.77 and 9.22 percent, respectively, as demand for the commodities stumbled in the off-season.
On the flip side, two bond funds—the Pimco 25+ Year Zero Coupon U.S. Treasury fund (NYSEArca: ZROZ) and the Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury fund (NYSEArca: EDV)—rose 3.23 and 2.97 percent, respectively, as the bond-friendly response to Japan's plans spread across the Pacific to U.S. markets.
The best performers list was also home to two REIT ETFs—the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSEArca: RWR) and the Schwab U.S. REIT (NYSEArca: SCHH)—both rising 2.46 percent following the release of strong economic data in the housing sector.
