Clean energy funds outperformed, while miners monopolized the losers' list in the week ending Thursday, May 16.
The Guggenheim Solar ETF (NYSEArca: TAN) was the biggest winner in the week ending Thursday, May 16, tagging on 11.03 percent and leading the pack of renewable energy funds that topped performance. Meanwhile, metals and mining funds made up the entirety of the worst performers' list.
The S&P 500 rose 23.8 points, or 1.46 percent, over that same five-day period, closing at 1650.47 on May 16.
TAN and five other energy funds outperformed their peers, as seasonal fluctuations in the market ramped up profits for underlying securities in those funds.
Greece-based ETF GREK spiked 10.06 percent, the second-best performance of the week, as investors' wariness to invest in Greek markets eased on gaining optimism that the threat of Greece leaving the eurozone has once and for all subsided.
The First Trust Nasdaq Global Auto fund (NYSEArca: CARZ) added 5.36 percent, as a perpetually easing yen boosted output from automakers in Japan, where CARZ—which invests in auto manufacturers around the world—is allocated 38.46 percent.
All 10 of the largest performance slides were in metals and mining exchange-traded products, falling anywhere between PowerShares DB Base Metals ETN's (NYSEArca: BDG) 12.34 percent to the PureFunds ISE Mining Service's (NYSEArca: MSXX) 7.93 percent, as the precious metals sector continues to be roiled by gold's staggering losses over the past month.
