CBON
VanEck Vectors ChinaAMC China Bond ETFCBON Fund Description
CBON tracks an investment-grade broad-maturity government/credit onshore RMB-denominated China bond index.
CBON Factset Analytics Insight
CBON is the first ETF to access bonds issued in the Chinese mainland, relying on renminbi qualified foreign institutional investor (RQFII) status. Its 50 bp expensive ratio is not cheap, but reasonable for a non-USD international bond fund. The fund invests in RMB-denominated bonds issued in China’s onshore market by Chinese credit, sovereign and quasi-sovereign issuers. We expect CBON to struggle in tracking its index, but this may not deter investors with few other alternatives. Trade the new fund with care until its market fully matures. If it grows in assets, institutional investors should monitor CBON’s RQFII quota status for potential impediments to creation.
