EQL
ALPS Equal Sector Weight ETFEQL Fund Description
EQL tracks an equal-weighted index of the 9 select sector SPDR ETFs.
EQL Factset Analytics Insight
EQL takes the 9 major sectors that make up the S&P 500 index, weights each sector equally and rebalances on a quarterly basis. The result is a portfolio that underweights the largest sectors in the index, like technology and financials, and overweights the minor sectors, like basic materials and utilities. Is this a good idea? It depends on your view of those sectors, and on the importance of rebalancing. Proponents claim that its countercyclical rebalancing schedule will help it outperform the regular S&P 500 over time. So far, the fund has not generated statistically significant alpha. EQL isn't cheap (though a recent fee cut certainly helps) and needs to be traded with care.
