FCEF Factset Analytics Insight
Actively managed FCEF invests in publicly traded closed-end funds (CEFs) to provide current income to investors. It can invest in CEFs with exposure to a broad range of assets: U.S. and non-U.S. equities, government debt, corporate debt, municipal debt, commodities, preferred securities, convertible securities, high yield securities, MLPs, and senior loans. By their nature the underlying CEFs can exhibit significant premiums and discounts to net asset value. Some rival ETFs specifically hunt for CEFs at a discount to boost yield, but FCEF’s selection and weighting approach remains largely opaque to investors—which is not unusual for an active fund, but not helpful either. As with those of peer funds, FCEF’s high expense ratio is attributable to underlying fund fees.
