FNX Fund Description

FNX seeks to outperform the US midcap sector by choosing stocks from the S&P MidCap 400 Index based on fundamental growth and value factors.

FNX Factset Analytics Insight

FNX aims to beat the market rather than match it using multiple factors. The fund screens the S&P MidCap 400 Index for stocks with alpha potential using growth and value factors. The results are ranked, and then tiered equal-weighting is applied to the top 75% of securities. Its weighting scheme leads to a perpetual small-cap tilt, which along with sector biases, raises the fund's market risk by just a little bit. Portfolio turnover can be high relative to a vanilla fund, which means that its sector tilts may not be all that sticky or predictable. FNX can be tricky to trade on a retail level due to some big spreads and moderate activity, but institutional investors have an easier time thanks to FNX's strong block liquidity. The fund charges an expensive fee, but it tracks well and is managed well-enough to claw back some of that fee at times. Note: Prior to April 8, 2016 the fund tracked the "Defined" index , which had a slightly different universe but the same factors and methodology.
