PVAL Fund Description

PVAL tracks an index of US large- and midcap equities that are selected and weighted differently depending on market sentiment. The fund excludes the utilities sector.

PVAL Factset Analytics Insight

PVAL tracks an index of large- and midcap US securities that appear undervalued relative to fundamentals. The index uses the median book yield (book-value-to-price ratio) of its parent index to gauge market sentiment, which then determines the fund’s selection and weighting. If the recent median book yield is greater than two standard deviations above the average of the trailing 28 quarters, then the market is considered a bear market. Otherwise, it’s considered a normal market. In practice, this translates to a bear classification roughly 5% of the time. Market sentiment is gauged annually. In a bear market, securities are ranked by book yield. During normal market conditions, securities are ranked by financial leverage, price volatility, and dispersion of earnings estimates. In both cases, PVAL selects the top 30% of securities and weights them in tiers by their ranking. Financial sector firms are ranked and weighted separately, and the sector receives the same weight as in the parent index. The fund excludes the utilities sector. PVAL is reasonably priced, but faces stiff competition in the crowded US equity space.
