TILT Fund Description

TILT tracks a broad US index with a tilt toward small-cap and value segments.

TILT Factset Analytics Insight

TILT fits poorly to our neutral benchmark, by design: It aims to increase exposure to small-cap and value stocks consistent with a factor model made famous by Fama and French. Without doubt, the fund delivers its small-cap tilt, measured both by average market cap and by the size of the small-cap bucket. However, TILT's P/E and P/B ratios paint a mixed value picture with the former higher than the market and the latter lower. Higher P/Es make sense given the fund's small-cap bias. The fund's slight sector biases align with its value tilt, notably with an overweight to financials. In all, TILT delivers a plausible alternative to its vanilla peers with a bit more market risk. TILT shows adequate liquidity, though spreads are still significant and volume is unremarkable. Larger investors should find ample underlying liquidity for block trades. While TILT isn't cheap next to plain-vanilla competitors, it's significantly cheaper than many other quant-based alternatives in the segment, and holding costs are even lower thanks to tight tracking.
