USCI
United States Commodity Index FundUSCI Fund Description
USCI tracks an equal-weighted index of 14 commodity futures contracts selected based on their level of backwardation and price momentum.
USCI Factset Analytics Insight
USCI aims to be the ultimate contango killer. Each month, it picks the 7 commodities with the greatest backwardation (or least contango) and the 7 commodities with the greatest 12-month price momentum, with the caveat that it holds at least one precious metal, industrial metal, energy, livestock, soft, and grain commodity. From there, it equally weights the contract on each commodity with the greatest backwardation or least contango. Accordingly, USCI often bests our benchmark, at least with respect to impact from roll costs. USCI rarely looks like our benchmark, especially given how it often cuts energy severely, but those biases could change any month. USCI trades briskly, with small spreads for retail investors and perfect block liquidity. However, the fund isn't cheap to hold, which is typical of the futures-based commodity ETF space. Tracking can be volatile, and investors should note that USCI issues a K-1 at tax time.
