VDE Fund Description

The Vanguard Energy ETF tracks a market-cap-weighted index of US energy companies. The index includes those companies deemed investable by MSCI and covers 98% of the market.

VDE Factset Analytics Insight

VDE offers broad exposure to US equity stocks at low all-in costs. VDE holds more stocks than most peer funds (excepting rival fund FENY, which tracks a similar MSCI index). Still, the coverage is concentrated in leading names, in keeping with the market. VDE charges a very low fee and makes it count with tight tracking. Trading costs are low too, although it’s no match for liquidity-leader XLE in trading volume. Outside of some transparency issues—holdings are not disclosed daily—VDE earns Analyst Pick for broad, marketlike exposure that’s cheap to hold.

VDE MSCI ESG Analytics Insight

The MSCI ESG Fund Quality Score measures the ability of ETF underlying holdings to manage key medium to long-term risks and opportunities arising from environmental, social, and governance factors, as determined by MSCI ESG Research LLC. As of September 20, 2018 the Vanguard Energy ETF MSCI ESG Fund Quality Score is 4.14 out of 10.

The fund’s Peer Rank reflects the ranking of a fund’s MSCI ESG Fund Quality Score against the scores of other funds within the same peer group, as defined by the Thomson Reuters Lipper Global Classification. VDE ranks in the 33th percentile within its peer group and in the 11st percentile within the global universe of all funds in MSCI ESG Fund Metrics coverage.
