WOOD
iShares Global Timber & Forestry ETFWOOD Fund Description
WOOD tracks the 25 largest publicly listed companies that own or manage forests and timberlands.
WOOD Factset Analytics Insight
WOOD tracks the S&P Global Timber & Forestry Index, a cap-weighted index of the 25 largest forestry firms around the world. Definitions of the space differ, and RIC rules require lessened concentration in an ETF wrapper. These factors combine to make radically different industry exposures when comparing WOOD to out narrow benchmark. In short, WOOD, diversifies into firms we put outside of the paper & forest products industry. This may also contribute to the fund's broader geographic scope: WOOD provides more exposure to Europe and Latin America than our benchmark. Rival ETF CUT also aligns poorly with our benchmark. WOOD wins Analyst Pick here, but it hardy dominates—it’s cheaper to hold than CUT but has traded at wider spreads in times of market volatility. Still, investors here should likely let the portfolio differences between the 2 ETFs—specific names and weights in the top 10 holdings—drive their selection.
