XCEM Fund Description

XCEM provides broad equity exposure to emerging markets excluding China

XCEM Factset Analytics Insight

XCEM tracks an index of emerging market companies outside of mainland China and Hong Kong. The fund is meant for those who would like to have more precise control over their portfolio allocation to Chinese equities (or for EM investors who simply wish to avoid China). By investing in China separately from other emerging markets investors can dial up or down their exposure to the country. In addition, they can decide which of the many types of Chinese shares are used to achieve their goal. XCEM’s expense ratio is quite competitive in the context of emerging market funds. However, the new fund finds itself in a crowded segment and faces a challenge in gathering assets. XCEM’s unique geographic exposure is likely to be of help here, as it clearly distinguishes it from other competitors. At the same time, the exclusion of China all but ensures that the fund will not fit well with our all-inclusive benchmark.Prior to Oct. 19, 2016 the fund had a different fund name and index name reflecting EGShares as issuer and index provider. Columbia acquired EGShares on Sept. 1 2016 and made no changes to the fund regarding ticker, index methodology, or exposure.
