XME Fund Description

XME tracks an equal-weighted index of U.S. metals and mining companies. It holds firms classified as operating in the Metals and Mining sector by GICS, including coal firms.

XME Factset Analytics Insight

XME is the only fund that tracks the US metals and mining segment. That's also its major issue: it winds up being a poor representation of the metals and mining industry. First, it includes coal companies, which we believe belong in energy. Second, it equal-weights holdings. The result is a portfolio with a large underweight to integrated mining firms, sensitivity to factors outside our segment benchmark, and higher relative volatility to our benchmark. The upshot is that it trades in large volumes every day with tight spreads, and underlying securities are sufficiently liquid to ensure that a creation unit of XME can move without impacting underlying prices. However, XME charges a steep price considering it tracks a well-known, annually rebalancing index with highly liquid securities. Still, similar funds charge more and XME has clawed back much of its expense ratio thanks to good management and securities lending revenue.

XME MSCI ESG Analytics Insight
