Bob Pisani: Are ETF Investors Asking the Right Questions?

ETFs allow for the democratization of a wide range of strategies that retail investors would otherwise lack access to. However, just because they can capture certain exposures or complex strategies, should they? Bob Pisani weighs this question and also asks if investors are asking the right questions when adding assets to their portfolio in a sit down from the ETF Beach House.

As the ETF landscape continues to expand, Bob Pisani, veteran financial journalist and former Senior Markets Correspondent for CNBC, sounded a note of caution when sitting down with Dave Nadig, President & Director of Research at ETF.com at the ETF Beach House from Future Proof Citywide. While the ETF wrapper has proven incredibly versatile—absorbing everything from standard stocks and bonds to options, leveraged products, and even private equity—Pisani warns that the industry faces potential reputational risk if it indiscriminately embraces virtually any asset.

The modern ETF wrapper is a streamlined and highly functional structure, allowing retail investors to access complex, varied markets seamlessly. However, Pisani cautions against pushing the boundaries too far. While the ETF structure can envelope a wide variety of strategies and financial instruments, adding overly complex or speculative products without genuine scrutiny could tarnish the industry as a whole, damaging trust and the reliable reputation that ETFs have built over the years.

And when it comes to choosing what to own, those chasing trends and trying to juice returns for quick income are approaching investing with the wrong mindset. “If the only reason you want to buy an asset is because you think it will make you rich quick, that isn’t a sufficient answer.” Instead of chasing fads, he advises retail investors to look at the bigger picture and ask a fundamental question: What does this do for your portfolio?

To Pisani, investing is about ensuring that every single dollar has a clear job to do. When considering adding alternative or complex assets to your ETF portfolio, make sure you know exactly what value it brings to your long-term financial future. Pisani shares the three questions everyone should be asking when adding a new asset as well as offering words of caution on emerging trends in the investing world that investors should be aware of.
