Monster July Inflows Put ETFs on Track for $1T Year

A whopping $125.5 billion flowed into U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds during July, one of the largest monthly inflows ever.

Year-to-date inflows surged to $531.8 billion, putting them on course to top $1 trillion by the end of the year—a figure that that would eclipse the current annual inflows record of more than $900 billion set in 2021 (last year, ETF inflows totaled nearly $600 billion).

July’s inflows, combined with ETF price gains, pushed total ETF assets under management to $9.41 trillion.

Record Bond Inflows

The bulk of July’s inflows went to U.S. equity and U.S. fixed income ETFs, which picked up $75 billion and $33 billion of new money, respectively.

The fixed income inflows were a record, though only one bond ETF made an appearance on the list of the top 10 ETF inflows for the month—the iShares Broad USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (USHY), with inflows of $2.8 billion.

Bonds surged and yields fell in July as Fed rate cut expectations picked up steam.

Those same expectations helped push the U.S. stock market to record highs—though the major indices fell from those levels towards the end of the month.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), the Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VOO) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) each had inflows of $9 billion or more during July.

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) was another big winner, with inflows of $6.9 billion.

There was a major rotation away from megacaps and into stocks of smaller companies during the month as investors reasoned that rate cuts would disproportionately benefit the latter.

IBIT Inflows, ETHE Outflows

While stock and bond ETFs saw the bulk of the action, cryptocurrency funds also had notable inflows and outflows.
The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was in high demand, with monthly inflows of $2.4 billion.

On the other hand, the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) shed $1.8 billion in assets following its conversion into an ETF.

The ether ETF still has around $6.6 billion in AUM and could see further outflows in the coming weeks if it follows a similar pattern as the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) from earlier this year.
