2018 is coming to a close, and what a wild ride it was. Trade wars, rising rates, the return of volatility to the market—especially over the past month, as a plunge in U.S. equities threatens to tip us back into bear market territory.

As the year wraps, we're looking back at some of ETF.com's most-read articles of 2018. Curious about what you may have missed? Read on to find out.

Top Performing ETFs Of The Year

Back in October, FAANG stocks were still flying high, and the SPDR S&P Internet ETF (XWEB) took the top spot as the best-performing ETF of the year. (A lot has changed in three months, however!)

Top Performing Fixed Income ETFs

As interest rates rose and bond prices fell, ETFs that shorted Treasuries performed particularly well—especially in July, when the iPath US Treasury 10-Year Bear ETN (DTYS) topped the list of best-performing fixed-income ETFs.

Promise & Peril Of Marijuana ETFs

Our exposé on the poorly understood risk that threatened to hobble the fledgling marijuana ETF market became an ongoing story we tracked throughout 2018. This initial story, however, remains the most widely read.

Simplicity Vs. Schwab's Robo Portfolio

Three years ago, Schwab launched its free, all-ETF Intelligent Portfolio, but as contributor Allan Roth discovers, the long-term returns leave a lot to be desired.

Jim Rogers: Extreme Bear Market Coming

In this interview from May, veteran investor Jim Rogers predicted—somewhat presciently—that we'd see the worst stock market correction of his lifetime within the next year.

Worst Performing ETFs Of The Year

Before December's stock market rout, the iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (TUR) topped this October list of the ETFs seeing the worst year-to-date declines.

Are Fidelity's Free Funds Really Free?

Zero fees make for a good marketing slogan, but as contributor Elisabeth Kashner explains, free is never really free, not after you take into account tax considerations and tracking costs.

Growing Pains For Marijuana ETFs
Uneven performance and the continued threat of closure hung over the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ), the market's sole marijuana ETF, as discussed in this article from April.

Comparing 4 Blockchain ETFs

In the first month of the year, four separate blockchain ETFs launched: the Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF (BLOK); the Reality Shares Nasdaq Next Gen Economy ETF (BLCN); the Innovation Shares NextGen Protocol ETF (KOIN); and the First Trust Indxx Innovative Transaction & Process ETF (LEGR). We peeked under the hood to see what set each fund apart.

Top Tech ETFs Of The Year
Given December's tech stock rout, it's hard to remember that tech stocks were the one reliable sector for most of 2018. In this story from June, XWEB once again tops a best-performers list, this time of tech ETFs.
