Just over $9 billion of new money flowed into U.S.-listed ETFs this week as stock markets continued their march into record high territory. Year-to-date inflows moved up to $278.6 billion, compared to $144.4 billion at this same time a year ago.

Of this week's inflows, $1.5 billion headed for U.S. equity ETFs, led by a sizable $2 billion inflow for the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA).

Earlier this week, S&P Dow Jones Indices announed that the venerable Dow Jones Industrial Average would be shaken up quite dramatically. Exxon, Pfizer and Raytheon will be replaced by Salesforce, Amgen and Honeywell in the index. The reshuffling is meant to boost the tech exposure of the Dow on the heels of Apple's upcoming share split, which will reduce the tech giant's weighting in the Dow substantially.

(Use our stock finder tool to find an ETF’s allocation to a certain stock.)

Presumably, investors liked the announcement, judging by the inflows into the Dow-tracking DIA.

Inflows For Fixed Income ETFs

Meanwhile, U.S. fixed income ETFs also saw solid inflows this week, picking up $4.7 billion of fresh cash. That includes inflows of nearly $800 million for the iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and $637 million for the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND).

The U.S. 10-year Treasury bond yield spiked to around 0.75% this week, even as Fed Chairman Powell suggested that the central bank would be comfortable letting inflation run above its 2% target for certain periods to make up for it running below its target in other periods. This new regime of average inflation targeting is a notable shift in the Federal Reserve's policy and may lead to interest rates staying lower for longer.
