ETFs Gather $4.6B In Week

Inflows continue into equity ETFs, but total ETF assets dip.

Investors added nearly $5 billion to the ETF market in the past week, but U.S.-listed ETF assets edged lower thanks in part to fresh signals from the Federal Reserve that rates may rise sooner rather than later in 2015.

The majority of new assets flowed into equity funds—more than $3.6 billion flowed into equities, with U.S. and international equities each collecting about $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, fixed-income ETFs had inflows of $493 million. Total ETF assets stood at almost $1.854 trillion as of Thursday, June 26, according to data compiled by ETF.com. The S&P 500 Index’s 0.12 percent decline pulled assets lower.

This week, financial markets continued their downtrend in part on James Bullard’s, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, bullish assessment of the U.S. economy and his views that the economy is improving enough to withstand an increase in short-term interest rates.

The most popular fund was the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY | A-98), which pulled in $1.55 billion, while the week’s least popular fund, the Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG | A-89), bled $658.7 million.
