Despite another week of intense stock market volatility, exchange-traded fund investors didn’t flinch. Altogether, they added $3.7 billion to U.S.-listed ETFs, the first net inflow in three weeks.

Of the total inflows, U.S. equity ETFs garnered the largest share—$3.5 billion—even as stocks got hammered this week. At one point, the S&P 500 had all its gains for the year wiped out, and briefly entered correction territory, down more than 10% from its all-time high notched in September.

The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) were among the biggest flows winners of the week.

Int'l Equity Investors Unfazed

ETF investors also added $1.2 billion to international equity ETFs, unfazed by the precipitous decline in international markets. The JPMorgan BetaBuilders Canada ETF (BBCA) and the JPMorgan BetaBuilders Japan ETF (BBJP) led inflows for this group.

Meanwhile, the area to see the largest outflows this week was U.S. fixed income, with a net $1.6 billion coming out of ETFs tied to that asset class. The benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield sagged from 3.2% to as low as 3.06%, pushing prices for Treasuries higher.

That benefited funds like the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY), which picked up assets from investors.

Conversely, prices for higher-risk bonds, like corporate junk bonds, declined in tandem with the rout in equities. The iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and the SPDR Bloomberg Barclays High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) appeared on the top outflows list for the week.
