The polar vortex that hit a wide swath of states last week also lifted energy ETF assets, while total U.S.-listed ETFs remained relatively flat.

U.S.-listed ETFs added $231.7 million in the week ended Thursday, Jan. 9, but that wasn't enough to lift industry assets, as total U.S.-listed assets dipped a bit to $1.689 trillion from the previous week.

The blistering cold airstream dubbed the "polar vortex" that left many states in frigid conditions last week was also responsible for asset inflows into two energy ETFs: the Energy Select SPDR ETF (XLE | A-92) and the United States Oil ETF (USO | A-100). XLE and USO gained $492.6 million and $477.3 million, respectively.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY | A-98) led the loss leaders during the week, redeeming $2.17 billion, followed by the iShares Russell 2000 (IWM | A-80), which lost $1.48 billion. U.S. equity ETFs gained $266.8 million while international equity ETFs experienced outflows of $469.9 million.
