Weekly Flows Show Emerging Markets In Favor, Fixed Income Out Of Favor
Investors continued to add money to ETFs in the latest week.
Investors continued to add money to U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds this week as financial markets remained calm and the Federal Reserve left money policy unchanged, as expected. The S&P 500 hovered near record highs all week, lending confidence to bullish investors.
All told, nearly $6 billion entered ETFs in the week ending Thursday, July 28. Of that, $4.8 billion went into U.S. equity ETFs; $850 million went into international equity ETFs; and $550 million went into international fixed-income ETFs.
Emerging Markets Favored
In terms of individual ETFs, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY | A-97) took the top spot, as it often does. SPY had $2.2 billion worth of inflows, which was followed by the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ | A-67), with nearly $650 million.
Emerging markets was also an area of interest this week. The Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF (VWO | B-96) and the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM | B-100) garnered inflows of $396 million and $337 million, respectively.
The iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB | B-58) was also in favor, with inflows of $289 million.
Fixed-Income And Gold ETFs Shunned
On the other end of the spectrum, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM | A-93) was the biggest loser, with outflows of $761 million.
Additionally, corporate bond ETFs fell out of favor this week. The iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD | A-77), the iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG | B-68) and the SPDR Barclays High Yield Bond ETF (JNK | C-68) all had substantial outflows of $450 million to $750 million.
Several other fixed-income products, as well the safe-haven SPDR Gold Trust (GLD | A-100), with outflows of $377 million, made the redemptions list fot the week.
