GRU tracks an index of four grains. It gains exposure using front-month futures contracts.
GRU Factset Analytics Insight
Despite its lack of transparency regarding its current commodities exposure, GRU is the second-most popular fund in the segment behind JJG. Still, its $7M in AUM isn't enough to keep closure risk in check, and doesn't generate much trading volume. GRU has a wider scope than our benchmark, going beyond the three core grains commodities of corn, wheat and soybeans to also include soybean oil, which our benchmark excludes. That said, it performs very similarly to our benchmark, so it's not clear if this diversification adds anything. Although GRU is marketed under Merrill Lynch's Elements brand, the ETN comes with credit risk tied to the Swedish Export Credit Corp., which currently carries a low risk for default.
