OIL
iPath Pure Beta Crude Oil ETNOIL Fund Description
OIL tracks an index of a single crude oil futures contract whose expiration date is chosen to mitigate contango.
OIL Factset Analytics Insight
OIL is linked to the returns of the Barclays Single Commodity Total Return Index (BSCI). Like all oil ETPs, OIL uses oil futures since spot oil is uninvestable. It dynamically picks the WTI crude oil futures contracts it uses to gain exposure to the BSCI. OIL tries to tame the impact of the futures curve by rolling its exposure into the single contract with the best roll yield. Unlike BSCI, which rolls monthly into the roll futures contract for WTI crude oil in accordance with a pre-determined roll schedule, OIL optimizes BSCI by using a quantitative approach to generate commodity returns by choosing a point on the futures curve that is intended to be more representative of the crude oil market. Prior to July 29, 2020, the ticker symbol of the fund was OLEM.
