SMEZ Fund Description

SMEZ tracks an index of stocks from smaller European firms in eurozone countries, selected and weighted by market cap.

SMEZ Factset Analytics Insight

SMEZ, launched June 2014, brings a measure of choice to the Small-Cap Developed Europe segment. The fund’s defining feature is its exclusion of non-euro countries—the UK, Switzerland and Sweden—from its basket. Both competitors, DFE and IEUS define Europe more broadly and have huge exposure to the countries that SMEZ excludes, especially the UK. With the extra room in its basket, SMEZ loads up on German and French stocks. Still, its country biases do not produce major sector tilts: Financials and industrials lead the pack as they do for peer funds and our benchmark. Investors aren’t buying in however, at least not yet. Trading is thin and expensive, and the fund’s slender asset base raises doubts about future viability. These serious concerns aside, SMEZ should appeal to investors who see a strengthening euro and want small-caps to play a eurozone recovery.

SMEZ MSCI ESG Analytics Insight

These companies may be more resilient to disruptions arising from ESG events.
