With the first half of the year almost over, now seems a good time to take stock of how many ETFs have launched so far in 2016. Last year was a record one, with a total of 284 launches.

However, the number of launches so far this year matches exactly the number of launches there were by this time last year—112. That means we’re on pace to match the number of launches for 2015 and possibly see another record-breaking year.

Other than that, the most notable feature of 2016’s year-to-date launches is that there are 18 actively managed funds included in the list versus 10 at this time last year. Factor-based ETFs continue to be a theme, as well as currency-hedged funds. Both categories were strongly featured among last year’s launches.

Smart-beta ETFs in general saw 62 launches in the 2015 period, while the year-to-date period saw 68, suggesting the trend is strengthening.

It remains to be seen what the rest of 2016 holds for ETF investors.
