ETFs Add $74B In November

The U.S.-listed ETF industry added $74.2 billion in new assets for the month of November, approximately $3 billion off October’s mark, despite having the worst single-day trading session of the year so far.

According to ETF.com data provider FactSet, U.S. ETFs have garnered $799.8 billion in new assets year-to-date, and now manage $7.02 trillion in assets.

Equities Keep Adding, Defensive Plays Gain

U.S. equity ETFs were primarily responsible for the drop in month-to-month flows for the industry, generating $46.6 billion in November versus $51.2 billion last month.

The large broad-market indices continued to lead inflows among ETFs, with the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) adding $5.48 billion in new assets. The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) followed, with $4.0 billion and $3.8 billion in inflows, respectively.

But the emergence of the Omicron COVID-19 variant and ongoing inflation fears led to some more defensive ETFs rising toward the top of the inflows table.

The iShares TIPS Bond ETF (TIP) continued its run in the top 10, adding $1.7 billion, while the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) gained just shy of $2.1 billion in new assets.

The iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL) rode a stunning $3.4 billion inflow on the final day of the month to finish the month with $3.5 billion in new assets overall, reversing what was a $1.4 billion outflow year-to-date. However, it’s not yet clear if the infusion of assets is a heartbeat trade, a result of a rebalance or organic movement from investors.

Small Cap Growth, Energy Loses Assets

The iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF (IWF) lost the most assets out of any ETF in the month, with $1.4 billion pulled by investors. And the iShares Russell 1000 ETF (IWB) saw a $923 million outflow in the period.

The iShares iBoxx USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) was a close second to IWF, with $1.4 billion in outflows, likely driven in part by the Fed’s announcement that it will begin to taper its emergency corporate bond-buying program over the next few months.

The energy sector also saw outflows as renewed lockdowns in Europe and Omicron’s spread rattled confidence in short-term demand. Near-month crude oil futures started the month close to $84 per barrel, but ended November in the $67.50 range.

The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) lost $1.2 billion, while the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) lost nearly $647.4 million.

Commodity Inflows Jump

Commodity ETFs had their best month since May, adding $1.6 billion in assets compared with $542 million in October. The dominant ETF in the category was SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), which added $673.62 million and broke an outflow streak that began in June.

Far behind in second place was the KraneShares Global Carbon ETF (KRBN), which added just $155 million in assets.
