VOO, TLT Push August ETF Inflows to $71B

Investors poured nearly $71 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs last month, pushing year-to-date inflows up to $592.3 billion and keeping them neck-and-neck with the current $900 billion record for annual inflows.

Other than currency ETFs, every category tracked by etf.com had net inflows during the month. U.S. equity ETFs took in the bulk of the inflows—$37.4 billion—followed by U.S. fixed income ETFs, with $26 billion.

International fixed income ETFs were a standout, with inflows of $4.8 billion, crushing the $98 million brought in by international equity ETFs in August. This year's August haul was more than seven times greater than the $9.5 billion investors put into the funds in the same month last year.

Year-to-date inflows of just under $600 billion are also double the $287 billion total at the end of last August.

Investors Buy Tech ETFs Like VGT

Taking a look at individual ETFs, broad stock market funds like the Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VOO) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) were the biggest flows winners of August, with inflows of $7.8 billion and $5.8 billion, respectively.

Investors also seemed to use a short-lived dip in tech stocks to wade into the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT), which had inflows of $4 billion.

They also bought up the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) ahead of expected Fed rate cuts in September. That ETF picked up $3.8 billion of inflows during August, bringing its year-to-date haul up to $10.5 billion.

Cutting Credit Risk

On the other side of the ledger, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) topped the list with outflows of $8.3 billion. Flows for the ETF, which is used extensively by short-term traders, have diverged from other major S&P 500 ETFs this year.

The Invesco Senior Loan ETF (BKLN) and the iShares iBoxx USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) were No.2 and No.3 on the outflows list. Investors seemed to take some credit risk off the table amid lingering worries about the health of the U.S. economy.
