The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) made exchange-traded fund history last year when it registered nearly $113 billion in annual inflows, a record-breaking calendar-year haul for a single ETF.

VOO accounted for one out of every 10 dollars invested into U.S.-listed ETFs last year, an incredible feat in a year where total inflows hit a record of their own at more than $1.1 trillion.

But as excited as investors were for VOO in 2024, they’ve taken things to another level in 2025. Since the start of the year, investors have poured a whopping $21.6 billion into the ETF, according to etf.com’s Fund Flows tool. That accounts for a quarter of the $86 billion that has gone into U.S.-listed ETFs so far this year.

VOO inflows

For context, no other ETF has year-to-date inflows of more than $3.8 billion, and it's hard to recall ever seeing such separation between the number one ETF and the rest of the pack. While the year is still young, if VOO maintains its current pace, it will garner an incredible $260 billion in inflows by the end of 2025.

VOO Thoroughly Outperforming Competition

Of course, the inflows might—and likely will—slow down at some point. But what was once a three-way race between the largest S&P 500 ETFs— VOO, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV)—is turning into a one-horse race.

To be sure, VOO still isn’t the largest ETF by assets. That title still belongs to SPY, which has $633 billion in AUM compared to VOO’s $624 billion. But make no mistake, it’s only a matter of days before VOO takes SPY’s crown and then leaves the longtime champion in the dust.

After that, VOO’s sights will be set on another prize: becoming the first ETF to reach $1 trillion in assets under management, an achievement that could be unlocked in the next few years depending on flows and stock market performance.
