Falling markets reacting to geopolitical tensions in Iraq and a political upstage in the U.S. dampened the past week’s surge in ETF assets.
Investors added $6.3 billion to ETFs in the past week, raising total U.S.-listed ETF assets to $1.825 trillion as markets hit new records on strong jobs data in May, reflecting a pickup in the economy that was severely hampered by an extraordinary winter.
U.S. equity ETFs attracted the most assets this week, taking in $4.85 billion, followed by international equity ETFs, which gathered a net of $2.37 billion in the past week. U.S. fixed-income ETFs saw net creations of $76.4 million, and international fixed-income ETFs attracted $163 million, according to data compiled by ETF.com Analytics.
The S&P 500 Index fell by 10.35 points, or less than 1 percent, in the week ended Thursday, June 12, closing at 1,930.11. The downward momentum was fueled by renewed fighting in Iraq and the unexpected defeat in a Republican primary of Rep. Eric Cantor (R., Va.), the majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives to a tea party member.
Cantor’s defeat inspired concerns that more legislative gridlock is ahead in the world's largest economy.
The SPDR S&P 500 (SPY | A-97) last week led all ETFs, with inflows of $832 million, raising its total assets to $161.8 billion. Meanwhile, the UBS AG FI Enhanced Big Cap Growth ETN (FBG) led net single-fund redemptions, with outflows of $990 million in the past week.
