Strong Weekly ETF Flows Puts Record At Hand
New annual inflows record could be a week away.
U.S.-listed ETFs saw nearly $7 billion in new assets land during the ending Thursday, Aug. 3, with fixed-income ETFs leading the way, with nearly $2.5 billion in new inflows. International equity ETFs saw $2.4 billion and U.S. equity ETFs attracted $1.3 billion as the year-to-date total of new inflows fell a hair short of $280 billion.
That puts the annual record of new assets of $287.5 billion, which was notched last year, easily within a week away, if the year’s pattern of steady inflows continues.
All asset classes saw positive flows except for commodities, which had $121 million in outflows, and currency, down $7 million.
Top Inflows & Outflows
After seeing more than $3 billion in outflows for the year, the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) saw its demand fortunes reverse this week as it was the top ETF for inflows, with $1.85 billion, putting it well ahead of the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF (VEA) ($1 billion) and the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) ($732 million).
The IVV competitor SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) saw the second-most outflows, with just over $1 billion, which trailed the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ), which registered $1.3 billion in outflows.
Overall, it was a fairly uneventful week for flows, as they were distributed fairly evenly over asset classes and it was the typical case of the largest ETFs leading both side of the flows coin.
U.S.-listed ETFs now hold $3.07 trillion in assets under management.
