Weekly ETF Fund Flows: IVV Loses $1.3B

IVV redeemed $1.3 billion in the week ended Jan. 2, 2014, as U.S.-listed ETF assets edged lower to $1.690 trillion.

Investors started the New Year on a cautious note by adding $826.1 million to U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds in the week ended Thursday, Jan. 2, dropping overall ETF assets lower from 1.692 trillion from the previous week. The S&P 500 Index started the New Year on a down note as wary investors are mindful of the Federal Reserve’s promise in December to curtail its economic stimulus this month.

International equity ETFs pulled in $1.05 billion, while commodity ETFs saw outflows of $327.5 million. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY | A-98) was the once again most popular ETF last week, adding $1.36 billion, and bringing its total assets to $174.9 billion, while the iShares Core S&P 500 (IVV | A-98) was the least popular, losing $1.3 billion.

The S&P 500 dropped 9.4 points to close the week at 1,831.98 as investors welcomed in the New Year with a wary eye as the Federal Reserve begins tapering its $85 billion bond-buying program this month to $75 billion.
