Weekly ETF Inflows Tepid

Investors took a wait-and-see approach to the markets this week.

After several weeks of intense positioning, investors took a breather this week. On net, they left their ETF holdings little changed—only adding $972 million in new money to the space during the week ending Thursday, April 26. That pushed year-to-date inflows slightly higher to $81.5 billion.

As has largely been the case all year long, ETF flows followed the market. Despite seeing big moves up and down during the week, the S&P 500 finished the week close to unchanged—mirroring flows.

With the Q2 earnings season in full swing, corporations have been hitting it out of the park. According to Bloomberg, 82% of companies that have reported so far have beaten estimates, the largest percentage on record. However, nagging concerns about trade, slowing growth overseas, and interest rates offset the rosy-profits picture.

Meanwhile, as the stock market stalled, the bond market saw action. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield hit a four-year high of 3.04% on Wednesday before backing down to last trade at 2.96% on Friday.

‘SPTM’ Assets Increase By A Quarter

Taking a look at individual ETFs, the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (IEFA) and the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) were the week’s biggest inflows winners.

On a percentage basis, the SPDR Portfolio Total Stock Market ETF (SPTM) had the largest jump, with an AUM increase of 24%.

On the other side of the ledger, the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ), the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) were the ETFs with the largest outflows during the week.
